Bank Accounts
What is to be done with bank accounts after a death?
Did you know that bank accounts can be automatically frozen after a death? To avoid complications, it’s important to notify the bank as soon as possible. Here are a few tips to help navigate this process:
1️⃣ Notify the Bank Immediately
Let the bank know about the passing and inquire about their procedures for releasing funds.
2️⃣ Keep a Joint Account Open
If there’s a joint account, it’s recommended to keep it open for at least six months to deposit cheques made out to the deceased.
3️⃣ Remove a Name from a Joint Account
To remove the deceased's name from a joint account, you’ll need to provide a Certified Copy of the Death Certificate.
4️⃣ Accessing a Safety Deposit Box
If the deceased had a safety deposit box, the contents may be sealed after death. A Certified Copy of the Death Certificate will also be required to access the box.
Taking these steps can help ease the financial process during this difficult time. If you have questions, we’re here to assist you.
