The Importance of Having a Will

While everyone knows they should have a will, about 70% of people don’t. Writing a will is easy, inexpensive, and gives you peace of mind, knowing that your hard-earned assets and property will be distributed according to your wishes.

If you have children, a will allows you to specify who will care for them, ensuring that decision is made by you—not the courts.

To create a legal will, you must be:

  1. At least 18 years old
  2. Of sound mind

Here’s what makes a will valid:

  1.  Expressly state that it is your will.
  2.  Be typed or computer generated.
  3. Be signed and dated by you.
  4.  Be signed by 2-3 witnesses who do not stand to inherit anything from your will.

Although it’s not necessary to have a lawyer to write a will, working with a lawyer can help avoid legal issues down the road.

Having the right legal support is key to making sure your wishes are honored.

Once your will is complete, it’s important to store it in a safe, secure place outside of your home. Many law firms offer free storage, but avoid using a safety deposit box, as it may be sealed after your death. Be sure that your executor knows the location of your will.

Planning ahead ensures your wishes are honored, offering peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
